Cherry Wood Recipe Box
American Black Cherry. Cherry is moderately hard. Our cherry recipe boxes are hand finished with salad bowl oil. Cherry will darken over time to a reddish-brown patina.
Designed and Built in Fort Collins, Colorado. We've been making the finest wood recipe boxes available since 1998. We offer our cherry recipe card boxes in two sizes; one to fit 3" X 5" index cards and the other to fit 4" X 6" index cards. Each model is designed to hold 700 recipe cards.
Laser Engraving. We can personalize your heirloom recipe box with a laser engraving centered on your box lid. We offer three fonts; regular, italic and monogram.
Built to last generations. The corner joints are glued then reinforced with "sandwich" splines. The lids are hinged with durable steel pins. Also, we attach a brass rosette on the back of the lid, allowing you to prop up a recipe card while you're cooking.
"How do you do that?"
Customers (and other woodworkers) often ask us how we create the 1/32" maple "outline" around our walnut corner splines in our cherry recipe boxes. Well, it requires an intense amount of accuracy and patience. First, we cut the twelve corner slots in the assembled recipe box at .250". Then we prepare the spline stock. We start with milling 2' long sticks to create "sandwiches" of .125" maple/.185" walnut/.125" maple, then glue .125" maple onto one edge of the sandwich. We then saw and sand the glued-up spline material to .250" thick and prepare the maple edge to .030" thick. We then glue the splines into the slots and sand them flush with the sides. It's a lot of work, but we feel that its beauty is worth the effort.
